Narration styles can differ greatly in literature. In the short story, "Girl", by Jamiaca Kincaid the narration style is very different from typcal short stories. The story is hard to grasp due to the lack of structure, meaning there is really no introduction or conclusion. The plot is merely carried on by listing and continuous thoughts. The narrator is a girl who is repeating and memorizing duties her mother has told her.
The story has a negative mood due to the cultural burdens the narrator must feel. Many women can identify with the cultural responsibility or pressure to uphold a feminine stereotype. Although feminine standards vary from culture to culture, the girl in this story carries a tremendous amount of pressure to uphold her mother's aspirations. Even though this story was written over twenty years ago it is very upsetting that feminine pressure is very much present in many present day cultures.
